Public hearings provide individuals who could be impacted by a proposed bylaw or resolution with a chance to address Council directly. The Municipal Government Act outlines the situations where Council has to hold public hearings.
Once Council has gathered and considered all relevant information, including that obtained during a public hearing, they have the authority to pass the bylaw or resolution in question. If necessary, they may also make amendments to the bylaw or resolution and then pass it without requiring another public hearing. However, they also have the option to choose not to pass the bylaw or resolution.
