Potential Water Restriction Guidelines

Potential Water Restriction Guidelines

In the event that water availability or system conditions are affected—for example by drought—Thorhild County may implement water restrictions. These measures are generally used when dry conditions, system limitations, or water quality issues occur.

Capital Region North East Water Services and EPCOR are the authorized bodies responsible for issuing these types of restrictions. If the amount of stored treated water decreases, more stringent water restrictions may be imposed.

When a water restriction is necessary, Thorhild County refers to three levels of water restrictions: Demand A, B and C. Each level has specific guidelines for outdoor water usage. The levels of water restrictions are:

Demand A Water Restriction - Requires the Municipality to immediately discontinue the following:

  • Water main or hydrant flushing
  • Street sweeping
  • Construction activities
  • Firefighting training
  • Fleet vehicle washing (including buses)
  • Other non-essential water use

Demand B Water Restriction - Requires the Municipality to immediately discontinue the following:

  • Water main or hydrant flushing
  • Street sweeping
  • Spray decks (unless using re-circulated water)
  • Construction activities
  • Firefighting training
  • Fleet vehicle washing (including buses)
  • Other non-essential water use

Demand C Water Restriction - Requires the immediate closure of all regional truck fills and the discontinuation of the following:

  • Water lawns, gardens or trees
  • Washing driveways and sidewalks
  • Filling pools or fountains
  • Water main or hydrant flushing
  • Spray decks (unless using re-circulating water)
  • Construction activities
  • Firefighting training
  • Fleet vehicle washing (including buses)
  • Other non-essential water use

These restrictions are put in place to ensure that water storage levels are protected until the issue is resolved. The top priority is to maintain a water supply for indoor use, fire suppression, and replenish reservoir storage levels.

Please watch the County’s website or social media channels for information and updates on any water restrictions.
