Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of County Services or designate, Thorhild County is seeking a suitable individual to carry out the following duties: 

  • Engage in a proactive and collaborative outreach style to enforce Thorhild County  bylaws;
  • Responding and investigating complaints and inquiries;
  • Engaging with the public to address violations related to Community Standards, Traffic Safety, Animal Control, Land Use, and other municipal bylaws;
  • Liaise with external agencies including RCMP,  Fish and Wildlife, Alberta Environment, the Alberta  SPCA, Peace Officers from other Municipalities and other law enforcement;
  • Conduct public safety and educational activities and provide support and assistance to municipal departments;
  • Interpret and enforce various levels of legislation through verbal and written warnings and issuing violation tickets;
  • Educate property owners and other residents about County bylaws and options for compliance;
  • Carry out inspections, issue orders, and provides advice regarding County bylaw complaints;
  • Review and make recommendations for new or existing County Bylaws;
  • Prepare reports and documentation as required for Court Orders;
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Diploma/certificate in a law enforcement related field and/or a minimum of 2 years of related experience, is preferred or, completion of the Bylaw Enforcement Officer Induction Program, or willing to obtain;
  • Exercise considerable independent judgement in dealing with complaints;
  • Knowledge and experience in rural bylaw enforcement and provincial legislation;
  • Valid Class 5 Operator’s License, clean Criminal Record Check and RCMP security clearance;
  • Participate in a Fitness to Work Assessment;
  • Must be self motivated with the ability to act independently within a close team

environment, exercising independent judgment within tight time frames;

  • Exceptional ability to deal with difficult people effectively and rationally and remain calm in stressful situations;
  • Excellent time management and organization skills, and the ability to effectively handle a demanding workload;
  • Physical ability to sit or stand for long periods and to perform a variety of manual tasks (heavy lifting, squatting, bending, twisting, and climbing).  Work is performed with exposure to the outdoor elements;
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours adapted to seasonal requirements: (20-30) hours per week and must be willing to work shift work, weekends, and statutory holidays.
Additional Information

Salary for this position will be determined by the candidate’s education and experience. Hourly pay range is $33.56-$42.77. Interested individuals are invited to submit their resume detailing qualifications, experience, and education.
